Some think the best city is "vertical" city where people live and work in tall buildings. Others think "horizontal" city is better where there are few tall buildings. Discuss both views and give your own opinion. 20170216 / 20141206
Development of cities that are thought as human’s habitats has been drawing enough attention from the public and has become a topic with various views. It is an endless discussion that either vertical cities or horizontal ones will be the dominant types of cities in the future.
Great convenience has been provided to people who live in vertical cities. The principal reason is that tall buildings allow people to enjoy more resources in a smaller area. One obvious example is that the staff working in a tall office building cannot only work there but also have meals and even go shopping in the same building. On top of this, many countries in the world have the trend of developing centrally. For instance, no matter people live in a developed or developing country, the most advanced medical care with top experts is often located in the capital city. Accordingly, the concept of vertical buildings is also in harmony with the centralized distribution of modern social resources.
On the other hand, a horizontal city which is more natural is less crowded. That means residents in a horizontal city can have more private space. A leading example is that a private swimming pool often accompanies a super-large house in a horizontal community. On the contrary, more places are and would be needed with the growing number of population. For instance, dwellings, schools, hospitals and working places would all increase. As a consequence, the rapid development of global population might lead to certain conflicts with the existence of horizontal cities that occupy more space than vertical cities do.
According to what has been discussed above, more comfort as horizontal cities offer, vertical cities are more likely to be the solution to tackle the increase of worldwide population.
Development of cities that are thought as human’s habitats has been drawing enough attention from the public and has become issue with conflicting views. It is an endless discussion that either vertical cities or horizontal ones will be the dominant types of cities in the future. In fact, the type of city that is able to provide convenience and can be in harmony with centralized distribution of social resources is deemed to be the future mainstream of development of cities.
Vertical cities, undeniably, offer more convenience with most of people’s daily activities taking place nearly in the same building. It is a case in point that every morning people might only take 5 minutes lift to go to work instead of taking subway for 1 hour to get to their offices in horizontal cities. Being time-saving makes vertical cities more suitable for people in future society than horizontal cities where people are still struggling with designing some more efficient transport systems.
Many countries in the world have the trend of developing centrally, especially the distribution of social resources such as educational institutes and hospitals, which obviously has an immediate relationship with population distribution. With an increasing number of people moving to cities aiming at sharing more advanced social resources, vertical cities seem to be the only solution providing feasibility for this unbalanced distribution of population. On the other hand, crying out hopelessly about some unreachable vital resources is what people in horizontal cities can only do.
Because of what has been discussed above, this essay can simply conclude that according to convenience and the unbalanced distribution of social resources vertical cities are more likely to be the final answer of cities’ development.
