　　Culture Note 1）Office hours

　　College and university professors are required to have office hours when they are available to talk to students. Some professors may ask students to make appointments in advance, but many allow students to stop by during office hours without an appointment. When students ask questions about class materials or assignment, professors see it as a positive sign that they are engaged and interested in the class.

　　Culture Note 2) Grades

　　In many university classes, students are expected to participate actively in discussions and group projects. Grades are often bad on participation as well as exams. Attendance is not optional. Therefore, when a student misses class for any reason, the student is expected to speak to the professor about the absence and make up any work.

　　Culture Note 3) Health Clinics

　　Many colleges and universities have student health clinics that provide medical care for students. Students can get physical exams, see mental health counselors, and receive emergency care when they are sick. When students enroll at a school, they are required to purchase health insurance that pay for health services on campus or at a hospital.

　　Culture note 4) Computer services

　　Most colleges and universities provide computer services including wireless or high-speed internet access, e-mail services, computer labs where students can use computers and printers, and classes on using different computer software. Many campuses also have a computer support center, staffed by student consultants who can help with simple computer problems.

　　Culture Note 6) Resident Assistants  

　　Campus dormitories, or "dorms", often employ Resident Assistants (RA s), which are third-or fourth- year students who live in the dormitory and are part of the residence staff that manages on-campus housing. Was help supervise the students in the dorms as well as provide assistance and support if students have personal or academic troubles.

　　Culture Note 07）Core Curriculum

　　Most graduate programs have core curriculum or general education requirements. To meet these requirements, students select a number of courses from disciplines such as the sciences, math, social science, foreign languages, literature, and theater . The purpose of these requirements is to make sure that students receive a foundation of knowledge outside their majors.

　　Culture Note 08) Meal Plans

　　Colleges and universities provide a variety of meal plans for students who live on campus. Students pay for the meal plan in advance and use their meal card to buy food at campus dining halls, restaurants, and coffee shops on campus.

　　Culture Note 09）Admission to College and University

　　International students can apply for undergraduate admission to colleges and universities in the United states and Canada if they have completely an equivalent secondary school education-about twelve years of schooling starting at age six. However, since educational systems differ around the world, a student may have to meet additional requirements or take additional classes.

　　Culture Note 10) Questions during the Class

　　Many professors encourage students to ask questions during the class if they don't understand something or want further explanation, particularly if it is something that other students may wonder about as well. However, if a student has a specific question that would not be of interest to the whole class, the student usually asks the question after class.
