范例 | Public transport House or flat Breakfast |
范例答案参考 (请对照范例) | 1: I live in Xujiahui District in Shanghai. Transportation here is quite handy. It only takes me 5 minutes to walk to the underground railway station. I can easily go to almost anywhere in Shanghai. 2: I live in house. I like the spacious area, which has more rooms, more privacy space. Especially, i like my lovely garden. With a big house, i can also have my own pet. 3: Skipping breakfast makes you grouchy. Studies show that people who eat breakfast tend to be in better moods (when I’m hungry - watch out!). Breakfast gets you started on the right track for the day. If you start out with a healthy breakfast, then you set the mood for lunch. You're more likely to choose something reasonable for lunch if you’ve paid some attention to your breakfast choices. |

范例 | Describe an interesting high school maths class You should say: What you learned in this class When the class took place and who you were with Who the teacher was And Why this class was so memorable |
范例答案参考 (请对照范例) | The most memorable maths class for me was when I was 17 years old. A special guest lecturer from the University of Durham came to my school to give a class to the A-Level mathematics students. The lecturer was called Professor Ross, and his research area was Chaos Theory and Theoretical Physics. He talked to us for an hour about Fractals, an area of mathematics typically involving self-similar patterns, where self-similar means they are "the same from near as from far". We know them mostly from computer screen savers, where the screen continues to zoom in (or zoom out) and the image is exactly the same. However, the practical applications can be applied in a great number of fields, such as urban growth, digital imaging, soil mechanics, fashion, geology and seismology. I still remember the first question he asked us at the start of the lesson; “how long is the coastline of the United Kingdom?” There were shouts of “3,000 miles”, “10,000 miles” and “100,000 miles”, but they were all wrong! Professor Ross explained that if you zoom in on one part of the map, you can start to see peninsulas that you couldn’t see before. Then if you zoom in on that peninsular, you can start to see coastline that you couldn’t see before. Then if you zoom in on that coastline, you can start to see cliffs that you couldn’t see before. If you zoom in on the cliffs, you start to see rocks that you couldn’t see before. And so on and so on, until you reach atomic level! Essentially, what Professor Ross was saying is that you can keep zooming in and zooming in, and you realize that the distance is infinite! This new revelation was too much for me – I couldn’t stop thinking about it! It interested me so much that I decided to study mathematics at university, so I could learn more about Fractals and Chaos Theory! If it wasn’t for Professor Ross and his lesson on Fractal Mathematics, I wouldn’t be where I am today! |

Do you think parents should be responsible for teaching their children some basics before they attend school? How involved should parents be in the education of their children? Do you believe homeschooling is more effective than attending school? |
范例答案参考 (请对照范例) | Do you think using a calculator in maths lessons is beneficial or detrimental to learning? This is an interesting question, because my favorite subject is maths! At elementary level, I agree that schools should not use calculators, but instead encourage children to calculate the operations in their head. This will help them improve their arithmetic skills. However, as students reach an advanced level of mathematics, calculations become incredibly complicated and tedious, and can take a very long time to complete. It is still important that the students understand the process of the calculations, but it is more efficient to use a calculator. The calculator doesn’t answer the questions; it just helps with the calculations for each step of the process! For this reason I believe that calculators and computers are very beneficial for advanced mathematics, and I believe that all students studying advanced mathematics should be taught how to use calculators properly. Do you think parents should be responsible for teaching their children some basics before they attend school? How involved should parents be in the education of their children? Do you believe homeschooling is more effective than attending school? There is a lot of research to show that if parents are involved in their child’s education, then the child will be much more successful at school. I think parents should be involved in their child’s education at all levels by teaching them basic reading and writing before they attend school, and helping them with homework when the child is at primary school and middle school. Even when the work becomes too difficult for the parents to help with, for example when their child is at high school or university, parents should still support their child by ensuring they finish their assignments, and making sure they attend all their classes. At all levels, I believe a good parent should have a positive relationship with their child’s school, by communicating regularly, asking questions about anything they are unsure about, giving feedback, and supporting the school if there is a disciplinary issue. |
