In some countries young people areencouraged to work or travel for a year between finishing high school andstarting university studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages for youngpeople who decide to do this.
Introduction
Para 1
It is quite common these days for young people in many countries to havea break from studying after graduating from high school. The trend is notrestricted to rich students who have the money to travel, but is also evidentamong poorer students who choose to work and become economically independentfor a period of time.
Body
Para 2
The reasons for this trend may involve the recognition that a youngadult who passes directly from school to university is rather restricted interms of general knowledge and experience of the world. By contrast, those whohave spent some time earning a living or travelling to other places, have a broaderview of life and better personal resources to draw on. They tend to be moreindependent, which is a very important factor in academic study and research,as well as giving them an advantage in terms of coping with the challenges ofstudent life.
Para 3
However, there are certainly dangers in taking time off at thatimportant age. Young adults may end up never returning to their studies orfinding it difficult to readapt to an academic environment. They may think thatit is better to continue in a particular job, or to do something completelydifferent from a university course. But overall, I think this is less likelytoday, when academic qualifications are essential for getting a reasonablecareer.
Conclusion
Para 4
My view is that young people should be encouraged to broaden theirhorizons. That is the best way for them to get a clear perspective of what theyare hoping to do with their lives and why. Students with such a perspective areusually the most effective and motivated ones and taking a year off may be theway to gain this.
与此不同的是,那些曾经出去gap year过的学生,通过换几个工作(shift their jobs),能够了解自己真正想要从事的职业(career they want to pursue in thefuture),这样回到学校后在选择专业方面就能够更加明智(make a wise decision in majorselection)。
题目2
Whenchildren startschools, teachers have more influences on their intellectual and socialdevelopment that parents do. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Introduction.
Recently, parents are likely to attach greater significance to thechildren's social and intellectual development. It is generally believed thatteachers play a significant role in the children's intelligence improvement, but I am convinced that parents are more influential from the perspective ofsocial development.
Body.
As an institution of education, the school is equipped with advancedfacilities and well-trained teachers. Teachers are trained to improve thechildren's ability of knowledge acquisition through a variety of pedagogicalstrategies that parents might lack. In most cases, parents have restricted timeor do not have the capacity to assist in children's learning. In addition, thepurpose to enter a school is to receive education, so it is obligatory for theteachers to help the children overcome the difficulties on the way to academicachievement. Consequently, the school should have the responsibility to educatethe young generations in terms of the intellectual development.
However, as far as the social development is concerned, school teachingmight not be as effective as parents. It is generally acknowledged that socialvalues are trained in a specific environment that parents could set a goodexample for the children. As teachers may pay more attention to children'sacademic achievement, what they could do is just to tap students' potential butnot to improve the social behaviors. It would be less effective merely with theguidance of teachers by informing how to distinguish right from wrong. However, parents are prone to expose the children to different social circumstances andtheir demonstration is secretly imitated by the children.
Conclusion.
Admittedly, school teachers are the experts in terms of children'sintellectual improvement, but the sociability could be obtained more effectivelyfrom their parents.
