Task1 What activities did you like when youwere a child? Please use reasons and details to support your answer. 2009.09.26

Key words: when you were a child

Brain storm: playing hide-and seek, reading, climbing, playing games…

Reading:

Speaking:

Well, personally speaking, I was a little bit obsessed with reading novels when I wasa kid. Firstly, my parents just started from scratching that time and weresuffering from great workload, which occupied their whole spare time. Thus Ihad to find something that could kill time when I was alone at home, thenreading jumping out to be the best choice. Secondly, I found myself quite enjoyingreading. My first reading novel was Harry Potter series, a fantasy fictionwritten by an English female author. The first time I opened that book, Icouldn’t drag myself back to the normal world totally, because I was entirelyfascinated by the magical wonderland described in the book. Besides, readingalso enabled me to acquire more extra-curriculum knowledge and made betterunderstanding about the world.

Key words: new places, reasons, examples

Travel to new places

2.      可以结交新的朋友(make acquaintance with new friends),分享见解(share opinions and stories)。

Speaking

Well, as to me, maybetravelling to new places will be my preference. For one reason, facing a hugeworld full of mysteries and unknowns, people should grab the chance to travelaround. Different places have diverse and extraordinary features, customs andtraditions, which can broaden our horizons and make us comprehend thissophisticated world better. For another reason, every time I go to a tourismsite or a new country, I definitely will make acquaintance with some new friends, coming from different continents. During the journey, we can share our opinionsabout the place where we visit or multiple life stories, or just grab a cup ofcoffee in a small outdoor café and enjoy the moment.

Task62009.07.25

W: Alpine plants are strongly adapted tothe extreme climates found at a high altitude. They often grow in barren soilor shattered rock, with great changes in temperature from searing heat toextreme cold. They are often lashed by gales of forceful winds. However, theseplants can still tenaciously grow, thanks to two important adaptationabilities. The low-growing feature of alpine plants has obvious advantage indefending wind resistance and repetitive snow falls. Most alpine plants have aheight of no more than 10 centimeters and most of their biomass is concentratedin the roots, so these features can help prevent themselves from beingdestroyed by the wind. Water and available nutrients often lie far below thesurface in mountain habitats. Plants with deep root systems are more capable toexploit available food resources. Another important feature is that a waxycoating can be found on some plants’ leaves and stems in deserts and the alps. The wax prevents moisture from evaporating and helps to store water inside. Thick, waxy succulent leaves are another adaptation to help prevent water loss. It’sinteresting that alpine plants have many characteristics same with these in thedeserts. The plants growing in these different habitats have to cape withsimilar harsh conditions and find ways to prevent water loss. Although allalpine species are perennials, it takes a tremendous amount of energy for anannual plant to germinate, grow, produce a flower, and mature a seed all in oneshort season. It takes less energy for a perennial to grow and use storedenergy from previous year’s growth. If the growing season is too short in agiven year or the conditions are not right, an annual plant may die withoutever having the chance to produce the seeds.

Q: Summarize the lecture and explain howalpine plants adapt to extreme climate.
