Speaking of a time  when I had to be friendly to someone I dislike or hate, I’d like to talk  about paying New Year calls during the Spring Festival. Generally speaking,  it is a tradition for Chinese people to visit their relatives during this big  time and share happiness with the whole family, which is supposed to a  cheerful family reunion. Yet, for me, it’s an excruciating moment to answer  questions from elders and defend my teeny-tiny esteem.

For instance, I didn’t enjoy the Spring  Festival that just passed at all. I mean, I can still remember that it was  the third day of the Spring Festival, and my parents and I went to visit my  aunt’s, which turned out to be a torment for me. That day was so long! Hardly  had we got to my aunt’s, when she started to question me with those sensitive  topics like: Why don’t you find a girlfriend? When are you gonna get married?  How much do you earn per month? I was told it’s hard for newly graduates to  make ends meet out there in big cities. Is it true? How about you? Stuff like  that. You know that really bothered me. I felt like that my privacy was  invaded and I felt so humiliated by my aunt for she kept comparing me to some  outstanding peers who are so-called successful young men or promising young  men, to which group I don’t belong. At that time, I really didn’t want to  talk to her and tried to start conversations with my nephews and nieces. However,  that doesn’t work. My aunt wouldn’t let me go. You know, she is my aunt. I  have no choice but to take her lecture.
