Some people think the best way to reduce crime is to give longer prison
sentences. Others, however, think there are better alternative ways to reduce crime. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
It has long been a controversial issue how best to maintain the social stability, with one of the priorities being reducing crime rates. Although some argue that longer imprisonment may shed crucial lights, I would argue that this is by no means the best way and alternative measures should be addressed.
Those who overemphasize longer prisoning may argue that this may have a deterring effect on the decline in the crime rates. This is because people who know that they may be subject to sentence of longer prisoning behind the bar may reconsider whether to convict the crime, which may have a deterring effect in the roaring crime rate. Also, longer crime penalty also means felons may spend longer time under control of the authorities, and even they are eligible for parole after serving imprisonment, they may still behave themselves, rather than being put in jail a second time. However, those who consider the longer terms of sentence may live in denial, because when the crime is convicted, the motivation and impulse prevail over the sober thoughtfulness of the outcome of convicting crime.
Other methods should be implemented to put the high crime rate under control. One of these is raising the self-protection awareness of victims. If people, especially teenager and children, could be told to keep close contact with their relatives, guardian and friends, then they would be well sheltered with kind reminding of potential dangers, which could greatly reduce the violent crimes. Maybe popularizing knowledge about business fraud could also help, as many elderly people are often bailed to invest their pensions in some financial products and become victims of financial fraud. This could be achieved by exercising drill in the local community so that the elder people can be educated and informed on the potential crime scene.
In conclusion, overemphasizing imprisonment may be too narrow an approach and may not achieve the potential effects and combined efforts of kinship and the community may help the teenagers, the minors and the senior citizens out in combating the high crime rate.
